HISTORY:

After the War of the Ragnarok, Hel, ruler of the Netherworld, had finally obtained the Einherjar (spirits) of her most hated Norse enemies. Most of the Norse gods had been destroyed and were destined to remain in the Netherworld as Hel meticulously subjected each spirit to her own brand of torment for eternity. There in her domain, she reveled in the eternal imprisonment and torture of those who had condemned her to an eternity of solitude and darkness as the warden of the Netherworld. Alas, her victory would not last. Soon after their imprisonment, Magni, the god of strength and the new chief of the Norse pantheon who had also inherited his father's awesome hammer, the mighty Mjollnir, visited the Netherworld and demanded the Einherjar of the fallen gods. Outraged, Hel protested that it was her right as ruler of the Netherworld to keep the spirits that fell at Ragnarok. Magni proclaimed that she would get to keep the spirits of her father, Loki, her brothers, Fenris and Jormungand, and of the Frost giants, but that he had special plans for the Einherjar of the gods. Upon one final protest from Hel, Magni exclaimed that she could relinquish the spirits, or he would bring down the Netherworld around her ears, destroying her and the spirits of her father and brothers along with it, but ultimately, he would obtain the Einherjar one way or the other. Reluctantly, Hel released the Einherjar, but upon Magni's departure, swore a vow of vengeance upon him and the spirits the he had stolen from her. Patiently awaiting her time of retribution, the opportunity finally appeared in the form of a young Danish boy, Ragnar Magnusson, who had been scorned by Magni himself. Ragnar had cheated in his victory over Zakris Vinson at the fabled "Trials of Worthiness," and thus, Magni awarded Zakris the power of Ultramagnis for which he stole the Einherjar from He!. Upon realizing the purpose for the Einherjar, Hel devised her own plan for a champion of the Netherworld, an ultimate destroyer from whom her ultimate revenge against Magni and his forefathers would be delivered. Hel approached Ragnar exclaiming that he was the true champion who was cheated by Magni and made him a similar offer to that of Magni's to Zakris. She would give him the powers and abilities of her fallen father, brothers and the Frost giants if in return he would destroy the new Norse champion, Ultramagnis, and, ultimately, help her destroy Magni as well. Ragnar was more than willing to participate in the utter destruction of Zakris, Ultramagnis and Magni himself. So, Hel gathered her own version of Einherjar, and bestowed upon Ragnar the Powers of Ragnarok.
